Labour has promised to nationalise rail services in the King’s Speech after the transport secretary gave rail bosses a stern warning.

Labour’s transport secretary, Louise Haigh, informed the bosses of Avanti West Coast and TransPennine that they must improve services or face the consequences.

During Labour’s election campaign, Haigh accused Avanti West Coast of offering “woeful service” as train cancellations increased.
Demanding “Immediate Action”
Now, as Labour’s transport secretary, she informed the bosses of the rail company that they had been getting away with an “unacceptable performance” and demanded “immediate action.”
Moving Fast
“Through bold action to move fast and fix things, we can make sure passengers get the service they deserve with the biggest overhaul to our railways in a generation,” Haigh claimed.
A Terrible Record
According to reports, one in 15 Avanti West Coast train journeys were cancelled last year, resulting in Haigh’s concerns.
Bringing Those to Justice
The Department for Transport called the meetings a “concerted new effort to bring together track and train and hold both sides accountable.”
Unions Welcome Changes
Rail unions have been calling for the nationalisation of British rail services for years. They believe companies are not paying staff appropriate wages, which has caused numerous strikes.

In response to the King’s Speech, rail unions welcomed the news, insisting that the services would “run as a public service, not for private profit.”
