Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s time could almost be up as Tory MPs plot his ousting ahead of the local elections.
Sunak’s Latest Blow
Rishi Sunak faces speculation of potential Tory rebellion and looming local elections, in which the Conservative Party is anticipated to suffer heavy losses.
Tory Rebels’ Strategy
According to reports, Conservative MPs have devised a plan to oust the Prime Minister if the local elections don’t swing in the Tory’s favour.
Sunak Ousting Rumours
This wouldn’t be the first time reports have predicted Sunak’s ousting, as just some months before, many thought Sunak was about to be replaced.
Mordaunt’s Eye on the Prize
Rumours suggested Sunak’s time was up with Tory MPs plotting to replace him with Lord President of the Council, Penny Mordaunt.
Getting on With Her Job
After Mordaunt denied these rumours, stating she was just “getting on with her job”, they were eventually put to bed, until now.
Wiped Out Tories
Tory MPs are once again worried that under Sunak’s leadership, the Conservative Party will be completely wiped out by election day.
Tory Party Extinction Worries
In an interview, one of the Tory rebels plotting against Sunak said they’re worried about the Party crumbling to near-extinction levels.
Fear of the “Reality”
According to the source, “The reality is that we are facing an extinction-level event,” while speaking anonymously to the Sunday Times.
Going down With the Ship
The source admitted that the Tories’ path is destined for failure, stating, “It’s for colleagues to decide if they want to go down with the ship.”
Not Giving in to Pressure
Despite pressure from critics in and outside the Tory Party to call an early election, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has stood firm.
Reform UK Concern
The MP, speaking with The Sunday Times, admitted that their biggest concern was Reform UK, which is now just five points away from the Conservatives in the polls.
No Response to Reform UK
The MP insisted that the Conservatives don’t have a plan for countering the mounting pressure from the right-wing Party, “My concern is that we don’t have a significant response to Reform.”
No “Red Wall” Appeal
According to the MP, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is not appealing to Northern voters. The MP accused Sunak of allowing the so-called “red wall” voters to defect to Labour and Reform UK.
“We Have a Leader Who Is Ill-Suited”
“We have a leader who is ill-suited to appealing to voters in the red wall,” the source admitted, citing Sunak’s wealth and lack of understanding as a reason for the lack of appeal.
“An Out-Of-Touch Multi-Millionaire”
“He is seen as an out-of-touch multimillionaire who doesn’t share their instincts,” the MP said, before claiming a loss in the Tees Valley in the mayoral election would be “Diabolical.”
Sunak’s Cagey Response
Rishi Sunak has once again resisted claims that a general election could be held as soon as July, although his response was more cagey than usual.
Sunak Not Willing to Talk
When repeatedly asked if the public and MPs would get what they want, a general election in July, Sunak insisted, “I’m not going to say anything more than I’ve already said.”
London Mayoral Election
Sunak’s response has gone from being stern to not ruling anything out, likely because he is waiting to see the results of the London Mayoral election on May 2nd.
Labour Likely to Claim London
Labour candidate and current Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is leading the polls with Tory candidate Susan Hall gaining significant ground in second place.
Final Nail in the Coffin
As more Tory MPs seem to be rebelling against the Prime Minister, the mayoral election results in London could be the final nail in the coffin.
