A report has revealed just how much of a burden the Southern Border crisis is on the American taxpayer, claiming that $451 billion is spent annually on different sectors due to the influx.
The Southern Border Crisis
A Republican-led investigation has revealed that the cost of the southern border crisis on American taxpayers is around $451 billion annually.
A Record Year for Biden
In a 49-page report released on Monday, the House Committee on Homeland Security revealed the staggering costs, along with a record number of illegal immigrants under the Biden administration.
Losses Across Sectors
According to the findings, nearly half a trillion dollars was lost in a number of essential sectors as a result of illegal immigration in the past two years.
Sectors Revealed
According to the report, these sectors included healthcare, law enforcement, education, and housing.
Impact of Illegal Immigration
Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’s Department of Homeland Security allowed millions into the country, including 1.7 million ‘gotaways,’ that managed to slip through, accounting for the $461 billion figure that was reportedly spent.
The Committee’s Perspective
The committee staff report showed the daily expenditure of millions of American taxpayer dollars directly associated with illegal immigration and the unprecedented crisis at the Southwest border.
Open-Borders Policies
The report points fingers at Secretary Mayorkas’s open-border policies as the main factor for the rise in illegal immigration on the Southern Border, resulting in a huge cost to the government and the taxpayers.
Economic Burden on Citizens
The report found that “Only a small fraction is ever recouped from the taxes paid by illegal aliens, with the rest falling on the shoulders of American citizens and lawful residents.”
Unprecedented Crisis
Mass illegal immigration, fueled by Mayorkas’s policies, is described as an unprecedented crisis with substantial financial implications.
The Scale of Illegal Population
Estimates by the Federation for American Immigration Reform and Yale University suggested that anywhere between 16.8 million and 29 million illegal immigrants currently live in the U.S.
Biden’s Term and Influx
According to the report, over 3.8 million illegal immigrants have crossed the border into the United States since President Joe Biden’s tenure began in January 2021.
Administration’s Failure
The House Judiciary Committee revealed that the Biden administration has failed to remove over 99 percent of the 2.15 million illegal immigrants released into the U.S. from Biden’s inauguration to March 31, 2023.
Limited Removals
In those two years, immigration authorities have managed to remove only 108,100, a fraction of the number that successfully crossed over.
Unconscionable Burden
House Homeland Security Committee chairman Mark Green said, “It is unconscionable for Secretary Mayorkas and President Biden to force the American people to pick up the tab for the crisis their border policies created.”
Burden on Millions According to Report
“Every day, millions of American taxpayer dollars are spent on costs directly associated with illegal immigration and the unprecedented crisis at the Southwest border sparked by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ policies,” noted the committee staff report.
Urgent Demand for Change
Lawmakers are appealing to the government to tighten restrictions before the apparent burden on the American taxpayer becomes unbearable.
