Trump Boasts About Role in Roe v. Wade, Calls it a “Miracle”

Former President Donald Trump, during a Fox News town hall in Des Moines, Iowa, proudly touted his perceived role in overturning the constitutional right to an abortion, characterizing it as nothing short of a “miracle.”

Trump’s Influence on the Judiciary

Trump’s influence on the judiciary, particularly in appointing three Supreme Court justices, played a pivotal role in the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case affirming women’s right to abortion.

In response to a question from an abortion rights opponent, Trump clarified his position, stating, “Nobody has done more in that regard” in protecting life, “We’re living in a time when there has to be a little bit of a concession one way or the other,” he said.

However, he also aligned himself with Ronald Reagan’s stance on exceptions for the life of the mother, rape, and incest, I happen to be for the exceptions like Ronald Reagan, with the life of the mother, rape, incest.

The Need for Republican Consensus

Trump urged Republicans to find a consensus on the issue to secure electoral victories. He cautioned against a divisive approach that could hinder the party’s progress, “Otherwise you are going to be back where you were and you can’t let that ever happen again,” he claimed.

Trump acknowledged the challenges of recognizing pregnancies within six weeks, a time limit proposed by some GOP-controlled states for banning abortions. He attributed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ low poll numbers to his support for a six-week abortion ban, illustrating the potential political repercussions of such a stance.

“If it weren’t for me, with Roe v. Wade, you wouldn’t even be talking about this stuff,” he boasted, “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it and I’m proud to have done it,” Trump continued.

Abortion on the Iowa Campaign Trail

The issue of abortion has gained prominence on the campaign trail in Iowa, with Republican voters expressing concerns about its potential impact in the general election. Teresa Probst, a 72-year-old Republican in Iowa, urged the need to address exceptions to abortion bans, recognizing the issue’s significance, especially among younger voters.

The Biden-Harris campaign strategically linked abortion bans in various states to Trump’s presidential legacy.

Consequences of Overturning Roe

The campaign revealed the consequences of Trump’s role in overturning Roe v. Wade, referring to a December 2023 report from the Guttmacher Institute.

The topic of abortion surfaced during the DeSantis-Haley debate, where Nikki Haley advocated for a different approach. Trump also disclosed that he had already chosen his running mate for a potential presidential run.

While maintaining secrecy around the identity, he dismissed the possibility of mending fences with an opponent like former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie but described Christie as an unlikely scenario for his vice-presidential pick.
